4 Steps to Prepare Your Skin & Soul for Summer
Keeping your skin and hair summer ready doesn't have to be complicated. We've done all the heavy lifting and broken it down for you in 4 simple steps. Scroll below to see how you can get started!
Step 1: Nourish
Nourishing the skin and hair means nourishing the body. Not only does eating the right foods provide the body with the nutrients it needs to function, it helps your skin look youthful, radiant, and glowing all day long. So load up on those green leafy vegetables, berries, and fruits, sis. Filled to the brim with high water content and antioxidants, they repair and rejuvenate the complexion with every juicy bite.
Oh, and essential to nourishment is getting enough rest. That means SLEEP, not just shutting your eyes for a few moments after you've parked your car in your driveway before you race into the house (I see you). Let's be honest love, when you're burnt out, overrun, and under slept, your mind, body, and mood seriously suffer. Sleep is key not only for the obvious reasons like providing you with the energy, clarity, and positivity you need to take on the day, but it actually plays an essential role in nourishing your skin since collagen is formed during sleep. Collagen is the MVP of the glow up! It keeps your skin healthy and firm while giving you shiny hair and strong nails, all in one. So if you can get at least 7 hours of undisrupted sleep per night, your skin and wellbeing will thank you.
And, would this be an Essential Rose blog without talk of essential oils? Of course not :). Products containing natural essential oils like lavender, rose, and chamomile, restore your skin and wellbeing from the inside out, hydrating, cleansing, and rejuvenating your cells while boosting your mood with every inhale. Not only are essential oils great for overnight skin detoxification and moisturizing (drop a few into your cleanser or serum and you'll see what I mean!), they regulate your nervous system and relieve stress so you can fall asleep in the first place (remember that paragraph above?).
Step 2: Heal
Does the sticky summer heat make your skin unhappy? You are not alone! Back to those essential oils...they truly are...essential. Those teeny tiny plant-based chemicals cleanse, purify, and detoxify skin without clogging pores, so you can glow up without bogging down.
Oils like argan, rosehip, rose geranium, and bergamot are known to treat acne, inflammation, redness, and other skin problems. They are easily absorbed into the skin, aka your skin drinks them up - leaving it supple and moisturized without an oily residue. Try them in our Rose Gold Face Oil, a liquid gold miracle oil for skin replenishment and soothing. The magic behind the oils in this product (and many oils in general) is that they balance the skin's oil production (yep, your skin is an oil production center!), so it doesn't get too oily or dry but achieves youthful, dewy, supple, and moisturized complexion all day long.
Another fun way to unclog your pores - and bring the spa to you (yes plzzzz) - is to treat yourself to a luxurious steam bath. Don't worry, it's a lot simpler than it sounds. Get into a super steamy shower, or place your head over a bowl of steaming water. Drop some rose and chamomile essential oils in and allow the aromatic vapors to cleanse and replenish you skin cells and soothe your senses. The steam opens up the pores to remove impurities, reduce blemishes, and cleanse from within. If you are not fond of steam baths, a 20-minute soak in the bathtub is also great!
Oh, and if you want to get reaaaal simple and use what's in your cabinet, grab your Manuka honey (or even regular honey). Adding honey to your daily skin regimen soothes your skin and fights bacteria, protecting the skin from environmental toxins that lead to irritation and inflammation.
Step 3: Exfoliate
Out with the old(skin) and in with the new, amiright??? Get rid of what isn't serving you and slough off those dead skin cells! Not only does exfoliation unclog pores, it boosts circulation, dissolves toxins and impurities from the skin's surface, and leaves skin vibrant and rejuvenated all day long. Not to mention it is one of the most soothing ways to self-care in 10 mins or less!
...But wait - not all exfoliants are created equal. While the body can handle harsher materials like salts and coffee, the face is much more sensitive. Try gentle seed powders and clays, like in our organic face mask exfoliant, Goddess Clay, which is packed with minerals and nutrients from the earth to soothe and replenish the skin as it detoxifies.
If you're going for the DIY vibe, pull nourishing ingredients right from your kitchen like yogurt, honey, and oats, or cucumber and sugar. Adding a few drops of essential oils like lavender, vetiver, geranium, and neroli amplifies the radiant results. Geranium oil is rich in antioxidants that diminish signs of aging and heal dry skin. Vetiver reduces the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks while grounding the mind and senses. Neroli, like other citrus fruits, is high in antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant components that help cleanse and clarify your complexion, while brightening your mood.
Step 4: Hydrate
One of the main things your skin loses with the summer sun is hydration. If you're like me and find drinking water to be a drag (is that weird?) then pop some lemons into your water bottle or spruce your elixir up with cucumbers, watermelon, and basil. But before you start chugging, the first step is to find products that don’t make you sweat more like urea and glycerol. Instead, look for more natural ingredients like glycerin, squalene, and essential oils.
Choose seasonal skincare products that are lightweight and non-greasy. These will hydrate your skin and let it breathe. And try going filter free. Smothering your skin with layers of heavy makeup during the summer is one way to clog the pores and rob it of necessary moisture. Oh, and back to that drinking point - whenever you feel thirsty, drink up. This means your skin needs water, too.
Once your body is nourished, healed, exfoliated, and hydrated, it's time to get out into the summer sun!...
...But, before you go:
I know we're in unprecedented times love, but summer is still the moment to let loose, release inhibition, and enjoy life. Even amidst the current pandemic. You deserve to self-soothe, self-care, and self-love now, even if things are uncertain around you. Having the right products, engaging in helpful holistic practices, and surrounding yourself with supportive company can help you tap into your summer flow with more ease and peace. Even if you can't escape to the beach, a romp in the backyard with the kids or your friends is a great way to celebrate yourself and all you're worthy of.
