When it comes to self-care, you may not really know where to start. Luckily, one of the best things about figuring out where to get started is that #selfcare has become such a trend - everyone is doing it. This is the kind of peer pressure I can get behind. However, it can be overwhelming if you aren’t sure what exactly you need to do. I have 5 practices for you to ensure you are doing self-care the right way, aka your way. The way to truly nail down a self-care routine/ritual is to stay committed to it over time and I am going to show you how.
What is it that you really want to achieve out of practicing self-care? Do you want to help rebuild and maintain your mental health? Would you like to see yourself make healthier choices for your body and potentially your family? You can practice self-care for whatever reason you decide.
However, if you don’t have a clear goal or two in mind, you might find yourself wandering off your path. You don’t need a huge do or die goal, but just a little something to keep you motivated and focused. If you want to quiet your mind, make it a goal to find a guided meditation on an app or YouTube and listen to it at least once a day for 10 minutes at the same time. Not only will you have a clear intention, but being consistent will establish a pattern and make your self-care even more effortless.
Yeah, this is something you will never catch me saying again! But here’s the thing, if you are the type of person who has a fear of needles and you are being told by 5 different beauty blogs that acupuncture is the best practice to calm anxiety - please, do not do it. Staying within your comfort zone can mean preventing yourself from taking risks, but when it comes to taking care of yourself, it can also mean listening authentically to your mind and body.
The main reason behind self-care is to rebuild a relationship of self-love; to make sure you are comfortable in your body and excited about the positive and supportive habits you are forming. So don’t take that strange juice cleanse to help align your aura if you know you would not sustain (or enjoy!) It over time, and then get angry with yourself for straying from it!
I get it though, sometimes the noise from the outside world is too overwhelming and it becomes hard to decipher what your body really wants and needs. If you could use some extra support determining what type of self-care is most supportive for you currently, try our Indulge Mood Oil made with Cardamom and Rose essential oils to strengthen intuition and deepen self-connection. Roll onto the wrists and temples for heightened self-awareness, while smelling like a gorgeous spicy floral goddess.
I know, I know. Easier said than done, Jenn. I get it. But do you really have to look at your phone as soon as you wipe the sleep from your eyes in the morning? Or up until you fall asleep each night? I’m not asking you to do the whole *24 hours of no Internet thing,* but try putting your phone away for an hour or so in the middle of the day just to see how you feel. It has been proven that if you step away from your phone or the Internet for periods of time, you will feel less anxious, more present, and have higher self-esteem. Those are facts! What can recharge you most emotionally and energetically is actually stepping awayyy from the technology!
Pro Tip - Keep Brighten Mood Mist on your nightstand to spritz on your face before your head hits the pillow for an even more peaceful and soothing rest. Made with Lavender and Citrus essential oils, this floral facial toning mist brightens the skin and uplifts the emotions, dissolving stress in its tracks.
Whether it be yoga, a brisk walk, or dancing in your underwear - get up and get moving, sister! We all know that exercise can benefit us in serious ways that do the body good. But did you know it’s also great for your mental health? It helps clear your head from negative vibes, obsessive thoughts, and any bad energy that may be lingering around you and within you - physically (your body stores it!).
Moving around - even if it means cleaning the house all day long - keeps your mind and body going and offers a sense of physical and emotional release. With your mind flowing, you can even become inspired with new ideas or projects. The endorphins you release while exercising are actually “happy hormones” and you get filled with them naturally when we’re breaking a sweat. So, why not literally shake the blues away?!
Every morning when you get up, before anything else enters your system - get into the habit of drinking a full glass of water. This is the oil that gets your motor running smoothly for the rest of the day. Once you make that first great choice of the day, you are going to keep making great decisions all day long! Don’t forget to continue to drink water all day, as well. (Try to aim for 8 cups!) And don’t forget your beauty sleep, girl! Listen to your body. If you are able, take a nap when you feel the need to. Rest plus getting water in your system is essential for your physical health (you’re welcome, immune system!), your skin (because Kylie Jenner who?), and mental strength and stamina! You will be able to focus on projects and get that to-do list done!
Again, find a pattern that works for you. These are just some helpful steps to get you started on the path that gets you out and taking care of YOU! Even one new process is progress - and progress trumps perfection, any day. Remember that. Celebrate your steps and keep your eyes on the prize! You’re worth it, girl!
