5 Tips to Practice Mindfulness For Stress Relief and Self Care

5 Tips to Practice Mindfulness For Stress Relief and Self Care | Essential Rose Life

What is Mindfulness?

Is mindfulness just a buzzword, or is there actually something to it? As someone who is predisposed to anxiety and depression (which was the whole reason why I created this brand in the first place, btw (!)), I want to shout from the rooftops a million times YES! Mindfulness is simple, but not easy, and subtle, but powerful.

At its essence, mindfulness is self-awareness. **Sorry for all your immediate gratification seekers...It cannot be achieved overnight - it needs practice.** Daily! And, 'non-judgmental' practice is key here. Mindfulness is becoming aware of your thoughts, emotions, and experiences without bringing judgment to them. Easier said than done, am I right? The result - besides actual changes to your brain chemistry (amazing!) that boost productivity, creativity, focus, and overall life satisfaction, it also offers a profound sense of peace, acceptance, and groundedness.

Benefits of Mindfulness

Here's a bit more about the benefits of practicing mindfulness. Of course, there are many more on this list, but we shortened it so you can do your self-care thanggg and focus on achieving it!

5 Tips to Practice Mindfulness

tips to practice mindfulness

  • Accept the things you cannot change

  • Self-acceptance is the first and most powerful step to living with mindfulness. Accepting your thoughts, even when they're not positive or loving. Accepting your emotions, even when they don't feel good. And accepting your experiences, even when you wish they didn't happen. Acceptance allows us to embrace ourselves, process our experiences, and grow into wiser and more aligned versions of ourselves.

Truth be told, life is a rollercoaster. Things happen beyond your control. People lie. Your kids disappoint you. You get unexpected news about friends or family. You cannot control how these things happen, but you can control your response to them. Accepting the things you cannot change gives you peace of mind so you can move forward and focus on creating the life you desire.

...And if you need a hand conjuring up this attitude of surrender, we've got you covered. Tranquil Mood Oil is our favorite natural perfume oil with uplifting bergamot, grounding cedarwood, and soothing German chamomile for heightened relaxation and tranquility. Roll onto your wrists and temples and inhale soothing scents that help you surrender to the moment and embrace what IS; the good, the bad, and the ugly - through the science of aromatherapy.

  • Appreciate the short pauses

  • Mindfulness is about responding, versus reacting, to life. And, it involves a series of subtle but powerful pauses. Through these pauses, you get to choose how you respond to your circumstances instead of acting emotionally and impulsively.

You can practice pausing throughout the many moments of your day. Before you react to something you hear, pause. Pause after you open your eyes and before you rise from your bed each morning. Pause while you savor your coffee or tea. Pause when you've taken your key out of the ignition and before you get out of the car. When you insert pauses into your life, you prepare yourself to pause, breathe, and respond when stress hits the fan.

Choosing to pause in moments of stress and adversity is the most empowering thing you can do for yourself because it makes you more aware of your experiences and gives you control over your responses to those experiences.

To deepen your pause, try products with lavender essential oil, which is known to regulate the nervous system, reduce cortisol, the hormone responsible for stress, and uplift the mind and senses.

  • Learn to take one step at a time

  • Mindfulness is, first and foremost, about being in the present moment. That means taking things one step at a time so you can eliminate stress and overwhelm. But before you can do this, you need to become clear about what the steps even are to achieve your goals. So do yourself a favor and break your goals down - no matter the size - into small action steps. Laying out those steps will allow you to be present through the process and embrace the journey.

...And, taking things one step at a time is as much about being as it is about doing. Aka, it's about making time for non-action. Take mini-breaks at least once a day. Close your laptop. Turn on some mindless TV (yep, mindfulness also needs mindlessness to prevent from imploding!). Get in a warm bath. Treat yourself to an at-home facial with Goddess Clay Face Mask Exfoliant, replenishing, purifying, and detoxifying the skin and soothing the senses. Do what feels good!

  • Embrace a Consistent Meditation Practice

  • Meditation can feel scary, overwhelming, and even stress-inducing, but it doesn't have to. Even if you've never hit the cushion, you can get started today in a way that's effortless and enjoyable. Try this 5-minute meditation ritual you can practice from virtually anywhere - your desk at work, parked in your car, in line for the grocery store, etc.

Meditation is one of the most powerful self-care practices we can do for ourselves because it helps us discipline our minds in the most practical, tangible, and impactful way. Rather than seeking something outside of ourselves to help us become more mindful, meditation gives us the keys to transforming ourselves from the inside out by helping to shift our brain chemistry, regulate our stress response, soothe anxiety and depression, and so much more. • Incorporate More Gratitude Into Your Life

  • Gratitude can feel forced and unnatural if your life is bogged down by stress and filled with circumstances that have a difficult time accepting. But studies show that gratitude can actually boost your mental health in innumerable ways. So take the time to develop a daily gratitude practice by listing things you are grateful for in a simple gratitude journal. Start with jotting down 3 things daily you are grateful for in body, mind, and spirit when you wake up in the morning or before you go to bed. This simple exercise should take no more than 5-10 minutes of your time, but if done consistently will have long-lasting benefits on improving your mood and mindset. Try it for 30 days and see what happens!

    Before You Go

Don't forget that the way to mindfulness is by coming to know, love, and appreciate yourself. It's a journey, love! It's messy and it's beautiful. It takes devotion and discipline. Use the above practices to get anchored in yourself - so you can live a more full, wholesome, and meaningful life, where stress may come and go but not completely shake you. Find that inner peace and contentment by turning within, becoming comfortable with yourself in the here and now, and embracing this moment so you can create the next one on your terms. Let Essential Rose help you along the way, with our mindful beauty products that harness the science of aromatherapy to keep your mind relaxed, your mood balanced, and your skin soft and healthy.

    That is truly beautiful living.
