10 Best Morning Routines for Skin and Mood
Stress and anxiety are part of our everyday lives. But when they take over our daily routine, it becomes harmful in that you may wake up having panic attacks, irritability, restlessness, and fatigue. Possible triggers of early morning anxiety are stress from some unfinished tasks and deadlines, either from work or at school or other negative life experiences. However, the right morning routine can uplift your mood and your skin to make you more productive during the day.
Stay in bed a little longer
If you don’t feel like rising as soon as the alarm goes off, indulge yourself and let yourself listen to the sounds of the new day. It may just be the steady whir of your A/C but staying in for a few minutes in bed can actually do more good for you than jumping off the bed immediately and starting the day harried and stressed. Five to ten minutes should be enough to be fully awake and ready. When you decide to rise, just sit on your bed for a while longer. You can use this time to say your prayers, meditate, make a mental to-do list, or make a quick entry in your journal.
Don’t check on your phone
I suggest you leave your phone at the farthest end of the room, turning on the auto-off or “do not disturb” mode when you go to sleep. Sometimes social media is more stressful than fun. When I started to turn off my social media notifications for an hour at my waking time, I found myself more relaxed and less stressed. There are so many negativity impacts to social media and you don’t want to invite those into your morning as you start your day.
Express your gratitude
Probably one of the most important things to start the morning is to reflect on your new day, how you went through the difficulties of yesterday, and waking to the brand new day full of blessings and opportunities.
There is no use in dwelling on the failures of yesterday, rather focus on a new day. Saya prayer. Read the Bible, meditate, make an entry in your gratitude journal. Make a new to-do list, including some unfinished tasks from yesterday.
During sleep, you los some of the water in your body's system, so by drinking 1-2 glasses as soon as you wake up stimulates your system by removing the acids during the night and give your brain the needed boost. Coffee can also dehydrate you so wait up to 2 hours before you take a cup of coffee to let the water do its' magic first. Instead of coffee, go for some stimulating herbal tea such as peppermint or sage. Skip the sugar since sugar can ruin your mood instead of improving it.
Sweat it out
Exercise can release more endorphins than any other activities, except for some hard belly laughs. An early morning jog or walk around the neighborhood is enough to keep your heart rate up, open up your air passages, and remove the toxins from your body.
Not to mention you sweat out some of the extra calories from yesterday and relieve yourself from pains. Believe it or not, lower back pain or joint pains can be relieved after just a week of constant movement.
One way to improve your mood is to improve how you look. An after-workout shower will help your feeling refreshed. After your shower, here’s some pampering you can do:
- Apply some body oil to seal in the moisture in your skin. Keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized helps to protect it from premature aging and wrinkles, skin irritations such as eczema, and keeps your skin soft, young, and supple. Use body oils made with essential oils since these do not irritate your skin. It is also absorbed by the skin, leaving your skin dewy but not greasy. Gently massage on the body oil on your legs, arms, even your whole body, making circular motions to increase the circulation. Body oils with apricot, rosehip, and bergamot effectively improve your skin while improving your mood as well.
- Cleanse your face. Applying some clay mask once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and toxins while revitalizing your face, bringing out a desired glow. Massage the face in gentle circular movements, chanting the I Glow mantra “I reveal the Queen within”. At first, it can be silly but as you get used to it, you will find it mood-uplifting and relaxing, knowing that within you lies a queen waiting to unleash her potentials.
- Apply some makeup if you like. Even if you are a stay-at-home mom, you deserve some pampering. Feeling good about yourself starts from within. Apply some lipstick.
- Wear something that makes you feel confident. Go out of your way to wear something exciting. Apply some sweet smelling mood oil made from rose, rose geranium, and cardamom that will invigorate you as you start your day.
Check out my 5-minute meditation article. You don’t have to spend lots of time to meditate and free yourself from all anxiety and depressive thoughts, but if you start your day early, you can meditate while waiting for your laundry or waiting for your pancake batter to rise. Find a comfortable place to sit. Close your eyes then focus on your breathing. Acknowledge all bad thoughts, but know they're transient. If your mind strays, focus on your breathing again. After some time, you will be so good at it that you won’t need prompts.
Write in your journal
I always find writing in my journal very freeing. In fact, the simple expression of yourself in the form of writing has far more therapeutic effects than taking medication against anxiety and depression. Not only can you express your anger, fears, and joy in the pages of your journal, you also exercise your brain. Writing helps to coax the left and right side of your brain to work together.
Don’t worry about the grammar or the flow of your writing. Just write what comes to your mind. What were your frustrations from yesterday? What do you want to achieve today? Maybe you had some time to read. What impressed you from the character in the story? Every day you learn something new. Write about it.
One way to learn to write is to learn a new word each day. Learn to use it naturally in your sentences. Find some writing prompts online. Soon, you will find writing as natural as any task to you. You will find yourself soaring new heights and discovering new things about your capability every day you practice it. Who knows? You might find a new bestseller within you just by starting with a journal.
Celebrate your womanhood
You don’t have to wait for March to celebrate your womanhood. You are an amazing person. Having an amazing career is a feat not everyone can have so if you are a career woman, celebrate it. If you are a mother, celebrate your motherhood. If you are loved and cherished, celebrate it.
Even if your circumstance is not ideal in your eyes, celebrate the fact that you are alive, fighting back, being brave, standing for what is right. You are a woman. You are a queen on your own. You can do anything you put your mind to. Think of women who inspire you. How do they inspire you? Think about their failures. Even the most successful women have their share of pain, disillusions, frustrations, failures. Learn from them and push yourself. You are a woman and you can do it.
Start your day with a smile
Nothing beats a smile to brighten up anyone’s day, even yourself. I love standing in front of the mirror after I am done with my morning routine, smile to myself, and hug myself. If you think no one else loves you, you are there. Love yourself. Put yourself out there. Meet someone in the neighborhood. It’s the best way to make new friends.
Give your best smile to everyone in the house with you. Be it your spouse, children, parents, or roommates. You never know how a simple smile can break the streak of depression or stress the other person may be having. If you feel down, dab on some mood oil to improve your spirits. The essential oils in this mood oil can help you smelling fresh and at the same time give you a tranquil mood.
Before you go
Health issues can also trigger anxiety, so do life events such as losing a job, getting divorced, or moving. In fact, it was reported that relationship issues cause more anxiety and stress than financial and health issues combined. That is because our self-esteem is usually anchored to our relationships, especially with our spouses, partners, parents, roommates or children. But going through the daily motion will do you no good. Break free from that and develop a healthy daily morning routine that not only will improve your mood but also your skin.
